Ultimamente ::: Life lately

Ando a experimentar tirar mais fotos para além dos pratos que confecciono e que quero colocar aqui no blog. Este fim de semana com um sol tímido mas certeiro na hora que estava na cozinha resolvi tirar fotos...as mais giras estão aqui. Para além disso na minha outra mesa, sem ser a de cozinha, tenho projectos, demasiados, em lista de espera como bainhas de calças, de cortinados, individuais de cozinha e manta...Da manta ainda estou a cortar e faltam-me ainda ir coleccionando mais tecidos para compor as cores. Mas lá chegarei.
Ah e destes morangos fiz um belo bolinho que vem já a seguir a receita.

Rabiscos :: Doodles

Por estes dias ando mais fora de casa e tenho cozinhado menos. Tenho em reserva uma receita que experimentei da Clara de Sousa e que adorei, coloco esta semana. Entretanto tenho feito outras coisas e desenhar é algo que gosto e que tenho tentado aperfeiçoar....e ganhei coragem e publico os primeiros rabiscos de muito mais que vão aparecer por aqui.

..de desenhar e pintar mais. Gosto muito e aos poucos acho que consigo ir aperfeiçoando a técnica e apresentar-vos algumas coisas :).

Começar com cor ::: Start with colour

Diz-se começar como uma página em branco...mas eu não sinto assim! Sinto-me mais como uma página numa explosão de cor...mas o que colocar por cima, isso sim, ainda nem sei onde começar!

..livros a preto e branco!

Folheei este livro inúmeras vezes nas livrarias e só hoje o trouxe para casa. O Livro do Ano de Afonso Cruz, editora Objectiva. Frases simples, com muito sentido, com verdade, com astúcia e com sensação de nunca tinha pensado nisto assim mas é bem pensado. Outras coisas sem nexo para mim, mas farão sentido a outro alguém. E é daqueles livros para serem roubados de vez em quando à estante e mesmo a preto e branco é tão cheio de cor.

..black and white books.

I read this book briefly when visiting bookstores but only today I bought it. "Livro do Ano" from Afonso Cruz, published by Objectiva. Simple sentences, meaningful, thuthful and with that feeling never thought of it this way but it makes sense. Other things not so meaningful to me but certainly to others. It is one of those books to steel from the bookshelf once in a while and despite being black and white it is full of colour.

Fazer base para copos ::: Coasters Tutorial

Eu própria sou uma fã de passo-a-passo em projectos de costura que me dão ideias para utilizar os tecidos que tenho lá em casa e dedicar-me a projectos que me permitem descontrair...para mim cozer na máquina de costura é bastante relaxante e adoro ver as peças a tomarem forma e a concretizar projectos para mim, para meus rapazes, para a casa ou para oferecer.
Estas bases de copos já andavam na minha ideia para fazer à algum tempo e decidi agora fazer para oferecer no Natal a alguém muito especial para mim e que sei que valoriza este tipo de trabalho.
Algumas notas adicionais:
- a entretela que utilizei é fina e colante de apenas um dos lados. Utilizá-la é opcional, embora utilizei para dar um pouco mais de estrutura e fixar melhor o tecido na zona do ziguezague.
- será necessário um lápis ou um marcador de água que sai facilmente com um pano húmido.
- se não tiverem máquina de costura podem cozer à mão com pontos mais largos que também ficam muito bem.

Vamos começar?


Após cortar todos os tecidos e ter os materiais prontos unimos o verso do nosso tecido com o lado colante da entretela (p lado mais brilhante) e pressionamos com o ferro bem quente até a entretela ficar bem colada ao tecido. Depois marcar com o molde o coração no tecido.


Juntar ao tecido-entretela o feltro e alfinetar. Cozer a toda a volta seguindo o contorno deo coração. Por fim cortar com a tesoura ziguezague a cerca de 1,5 cm da costura. E já está!

I'm a big fan of sewing tutorials and when I have time I cruise around my books and online to inspire me to use the fabrics I have at home. Sewing for me is quite relaxing and I adore seeing something being made, all the steps until it's finished.
These coasters were on my mind to make for quite some time and now with Christmas I've decided to make them and offer to a special person that I know like handmade things.

Some additional tips:
- the interlining I used only glues from one side .It's up to you if you use it or not but I recomend for firming the coaster and keep the edges of the fabric.
- you will need a pencil or a washable fabric pen.
- if you don't have a sewing machine you can sew by hand with large stitches and it will be equally fine.

Let's get started!

After cutting and gather all the materials necessary we unite the top fabric (the reverse side) to the interlining (the shining side) and with the iron press until the 2 layers are glued. Then mark the heart using the mold.



Pin the felt fabric to the previously gathered layers. Sew on the top of the heart line. Then with the scissors cut the excess fabric around the heart shape at 1,5 cm from the sewing line.

Before they pass away - Jimmy Nelson

O fotógrafo Jimmy Nelson abraçou um projecto muito belo, indo ao encontro das últimas tribos existentes por todo o mundo, descobrindo a sua essência enquanto seres humanos que vivem em locais remotos e muito distantes da realidade da maioria de nós. "A pureza do ser humano existe, está nas montanhas, nos locais mais gelados, na selva e nos vales". Jimmy Nelson encontrou estas pessoas, tentou entendê-los e trazer um pouco a sua experiência documentada com fotos lindíssimas. Lendo mais sobre este projecto e vendo a conferência Tedx fiquei estarrecida a observá-las, aquelas paisagens e aquelas expressões, a forma de viver de forma crua e em plena sintonia com a natureza e onde sentem "visceralmente" o que os faz felizes.

Existe um livro documentário desta experiência, livro que gostaria de ter um dia. Observar fotografias quer sejam paisagens, retratos ou locais de outros tempos...perder-me nessas fotos, viajar nelas e na sua mensagem sempre foi das minhas sensações preferidas.  Jimmy Nelson is an english photographer that has started such a beautiful journey, seeking for the last tribesmen around the world and discover them in their unique humanity. "The purity of humanity  exists, it is there in the mountains, in the ice fields, in the jungle and in the valleys". Jimmy Nelson found them, connected with them and brought to us his experience and his photos. By reading about his project and seeing his Tedx conference I was blowned away by those photos, those expressions, that way of living. Giving yourself to your environment and like Jimmy says feeling truly what makes you happy in those isolated places.

With this journey comes a book that I want very much to have. Like other photobooks I have at home I always loose myself looking at pictures, either nature landscapes, portraits, scenes from a different decade. Gazzing at photos always makes me think and travel with them. It is one of my favourite feelings...be lost in a photo and connect with what it has to say...And before they pass away we all should see them and learn from them. It is raw and unique humanity.

Primeiras ilustrações ::: Illustration, the first ones

A caminho de entregar esta ilustração para um concurso. Com poucas expectativas de ser seleccionada mas imensamente feliz por ter concretizado este gosto. E que bem que sabe!

Costurar individuais ::: Table cloth project

Por vezes irão encontrar por aqui outras coisas que também adoro fazer para além de cozinhar. Gosto muito de explorar outras ideias que vou tendo e o iwantobakefree é mesmo uma expressão dessas ideias. Neste caso um projecto de costura para a cozinha. Adoro costurar mas acabo sempre por não conseguir fazer tantos trabalhos como gostaria e a lista do que gostava de fazer vai aumentando, escritos nos blocos de notas, agendas e até post it's na caixa de costura.

Neste momento estou a fazer uns individuais de cozinha a partir dos tecidos que tenho em casa nomeadamente de toalhas de mesa muito grandes e que o excedente é uma excelente opção de reaproveitamento. Nas imagens os meus estudos  de combinações :). Estou a pensar na combinação 4 quadrados/8 triângulos e uma tira larga para completar a forma do individual.






Para completar este projecto preciso de comprar enchimento para dar mais estrutura ao individual. Sempre ouvi dizer que o enchimento de algodão (100% ou 80%) é muito melhor e tem mais durabilidade. Numa hora do almoço fui a uma loja de tecidos e só tinham enchimento sintéctico e que nunca tiveram de algodão nem sabiam que existia!...lá vim para casa e resolvi pesquisar mais sobre materiais de enchimento e as vantagens e desvantagens. No mundo maravilhoso dos quilts seria o local ideal para tentar compreender melhor e assim fui ao Allpeoplequilt.com e conclui o seguinte:

• o enchimento a seleccionar deverá ter em consideração a utilização da nossa peça final;
• as características do enchimento são: a sua forma ao dobrar, fios/fibras, "robustez"do material, a capacidade de aquecimento e lavagem (ler mais aqui)
• para uma manta de cama todas estas características fazem sentido serem analisadas e certamente escolheria um enchimento com fibras naturais por "respirar" melhor o tecido/manta e ser melhor para a saúde;
• para projectos mais simples como os individuais pensaria primeiro na durabilidade e lavagem vs. custos.

Em baixo uma Tabela geral das características do enchimento 100% algodão, misturas de algodão e polyester e apenas polyester:

Enchimento de algodão (100% ou menos) pode encolher um pouco na primeira lavagem. Para um individual pode fazer a diferença. Para além disso este enchimento  é bem mais caro que o sintéctico. O "respirar" do tecido neste caso também não é relevante e assim irei escolher fazer os individuais com enchimento sintéctico.

Irei mostrar o trabalho final com os individuais prontos...e com um bonito bolo em cima, porque não?

Sometimes on this blog you will see/read other things that also interest me and that are made outside kitchen doors. Don't get me wrong, this blog is mainly baking and making delicious food but my criative mind leads me to so many other directions. I sure want to explore more of those too.

Some themes will be related to the kitchen ambience/deco, others not so much.

I love sewing but I guess I love it more than the amount of projects I end up doing. I'm trying, really guys, I'm trying really hard to change it and be sewing proactive in the middle of raising by lovely boys. And like the recipes, there are more lined up projects that are stored in my mind and drafted all over my notebooks and post it's :).

At the moment I have one little sewing project I will show you (feeling the pressure) that are individual table cloths using 2 different fabrics from old large table cloths (stripes and squares). Check my study of combinations below. I will try the 4 squares/8 triangles + 1 large stripe.

To finish this project I will need a filling/batting (in quilt terms) to give consistency to the table cloth. I always been told to choose cotton ones, 80% to 100% cotton. But when approaching a vendor from a fabric shop she never heard of it? and said the syntetic ones were better and lasted longer? Of course cotton ones exist I told the lady from the fabric store....
I knew it wasn't that simple so I've decided to find out more. And what better place to look than quilting associations and professional quilters?

I found great information on Allpeoplequilt.com and leave here the highlights of what I read:

• the batting you choose should take into consideration the nature and use of your finished project;
• batting characteristics to look into are drapabillity, grain line, loft, resiliency, warmth and washability (read more here);
• for a bed quilt all the characteristics meantioned above should be analysed and for sure I would choose natural fibers because they "breath" and are more health friendly.
• For more simple projects like mine I though first of washability/durability versus costs.

This chart you see above resumes my tree options for this specific project.

Cotton (100% or less) can shrink a little. For a small table cloth it can make a difference. I could pre-wash but I must think that this option is the most expensive comparing to polyester. The breathability is not important in this project so I will choose polyester!

I will show you soon the finished individual table cloths...with a beautiful cake on top ;).

The beginning

O primeiro post que escrevi foi uma receita. De um bolo simples que tinha feito e que tinha tirado uma fotografia, algo que este blog me vai impulsionar fazer, tirar fotografias das minhas experiências culinárias e outras criatividades.

Mas depois pensei que gostava de fazer um primeiro post, numa espécie de inauguração. Que daqui a algum tempo quando o voltasse a ler me sentisse orgulhosa como me sinto neste momento. Aliás quando encontro blogs que adoro gosto de ir ao encontro daquele primeiro post algo inseguro mas que cresceu para um blog imaginado e idealizado pelo autor.

Este blog será para mim um caminho de criatividade, um percurso que me ajudará a  aproveitar melhor coisas que já adoro mas que tenho tendência a apreciar de forma demasiado rápida. Respiro fundo e inicio-me nesta aventura de ter um blog, uma experiência "bake and break free".

Assim terei de começar de alguma forma....pelo início.

The first  post I wrote was a recipe. A simple cake that I captured in a picture, something that this blog will make me do more often, take pictures of my kitchen experiences and other criative things.

But then, I thought it would be nice to have a "beginning" post, one that when you look back you will read and feel proud of that moment (has I am right now). When I find a blog that I really adore I like to read that first insecure post in which the blog grew into it's author idealization and imagination.

This for me will be a ride to criativity, a ride to enjoy things I already like but tend to enjoy them too quickly. I breath in and start this new adventure of blogging, a bake and break free experience.

So we have to start somewhere and I will start now...at the beginning.
